2018 VW Tiguan

Serving Merrillville, IN, Crown Point, and Hobart

Since 2007, Volkswagen has manufactured the Tiguan, which is yet another entry into the compact crossover market. Customers have plenty to choose from this hugely popular segment, which focuses on satisfying the needs of those who favor a blend of roominess and fuel efficiency. However, the Tiguan—particularly with its 2018 model year—is worth checking out for its smooth ride, roomy cabin, and robust list of tech features. Part of the nameplate’s second production cycle, the 2018 VW Tiguan is split into four trims: S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.

Exterior and Performance

Powering the 2018 VW Tiguan is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine, which generates 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. It is hitched to an 8-speed automatic transmission, which uses a Tiptronic shifter to simulate manual gear shifting and Sport Mode for a firmer and tighter driving feel. Although the standard drivetrain is front-wheel drive, you can opt for VW 4MOTION® all-wheel-drive system for better performance on roads compromised by snow, rain, or ice.

Interior and Technology

Although it has always been a two-row vehicle for providing a maximum occupancy of five, the 2018 model year marks the debut of a third row on the VW Tiguan. This third row consists of two captain’s seats, which consequently increases maximum occupancy to seven. With the Tiguan adopting a wagon-like design, it provides 123.9 cubic feet of passenger volume, as well as 65.7 cubic feet of peak cargo space when you fold down the second- and third-row seats. Upgrading to at least the SE replaces the cloth trim with leatherette, and adds front-seat heating capability and 10-way power adjustability and power lumbar support on the driver’s seat. The SEL Premium stands out with its leather-appointed seats, heated steering wheel, and a 3-position memory system for the driver’s seat.

Standard comfort and convenience features include a rearview camera, Bluetooth® connectivity for hands-free phone operation and streaming audio, a color multifunction display, and the Volkswagen Car-Net App-Connect interface for integrating infotainment functions. With the SE, the Tiguan is upgraded with air-filtering dual-zone automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, and push-button engine start. Remote vehicle start and adaptive cruise control are added on the SEL. And the SEL Premium is the only trim with a self-dimming rearview mirror, a nine-speaker Fender premium audio system, and a 12.3-inch high-resolution digital display cluster on the dashboard (in lieu of the color multifunction display).

2018 VW Tiguan Interior

For restraint and cushioning in the event of a car crash, the 2018 Tiguan comes with a pair of front impact airbags facing the driver and front passenger, a pair of front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and a pair of roof-mounted side curtains that flank all rows. Other standard safety features include vehicle stability control, anti-slip regulation, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and an anti-theft alarm system with vehicle immobilizer. An intelligent crash response system is added on the SE and SEL Premium.
